Shoe designer Noritaka Tatehana talks about working with Gaga.
Interviewer: What is it like working with Lady Gaga?
Noritaka: It’s always interesting. Her instructions are simple. She’ll say something like, “I need a red pair of shoes to match a red costume,” or “I want to be a ballerina,” then describe the kind of character she has in mind. Then it’s pretty much “omakase,” which means I have the freedom on how to interpret her instructions.
Interviewer: Have her requests changed over the years?
Noritaka: At the end, she always says she wants “something crazy.” But lately, she starts her requests by saying “Is this technically possible?”
Interviewer: Have you ever been stumped?
Noritaka: Her most recent request was a tough one. She wanted the heel to be filled with liquid so it looked kind of like a lava lamp. I had to try out a few ideas, but it worked out in the end.
